AUTUMN CALVING BEGINS....

At Trio Angus we have a split calving, with half of our cows calving in the Spring & the other half calving in the Autumn. So with some of our cows now calving we have been busy tagging & weighing all of the newborn calves aswell as pushing the cows that have calved onto better quality pasture paddocks. Although time consuming we consider this a vital part of our production system.

In the 60 days following calving the cows have to not only recover from calving & produce milk but they also have to get back in calf again, this requires an extreme amount of energy & nutrients. So once a cow has calved she has a much larger feed demand than when she was pregnant. Younger cows require even more energy & protein as they are still growing themselves.

Checking the cows each day is quite enjoyable at this time of year but once the frosts arrive it soon becomes a different story!
