Dutch scientists claim that the world could see their first test tube burger in less than a year. The scientists have already been able to create a form of ‘man-made’ meat by taking tissues from live animals, extracting stem cells & programming them to grow into muscle fibres.
However the marketing claims that this synthetic meat will be more environmentally friendly & will enable the world to produce ‘meat without slaughter’ are not sitting well with the public.
The natural food chain does not include humans obtaining their protein from a huge industrial vat. People would prefer to see their beef, pork & lamb produced in the way that nature intended, that is on four-legs & eating grass.
Then again the taste & texture of this synthetic meat alone may be enough to turn people away. Its slippery texture & unnatural taste will not appeal to most. Especially not when it’s going to be priced no cheaper than real meat which has a flavour that people have enjoyed for centuries.
No synthetic meat for me please, I’d prefer the real deal, otherwise I might find myself leaving the meat & eating the gherkins.
